The Way Our Life Is Driven By Our Thoughts And Beliefs

Most of people will complain and tell those things:

  • “I don’t have control over my emotions, it pops up like this inside my body”
  • “I don’t have power over my emotions and actions”
  • “I’m usually right about my feelings because it is confirming my beliefs”

All of this is mostly wrong!

The way we experience our reality and our life is not something random, we can have control over it.

The goal is to be aware how do we create and reinforce our beliefs and understand the way of going out this loop.

I propose a diagram to explain the main steps of emotions, thoughts and beliefs:

1. Circumstances

This is any external event occuring in a specific moment and in a specific place. 

Here for example, this is raining outside on a sunday afternoon

2. Thoughts and beliefs

There is always thoughts passing through us, in a day a human can experience 10 000 thoughts. Beliefs are thoughts that we consider to be true. They can be built on the repetition of thoughts. 
 
In the example: “It is always raining here! Too bad because I wanted to go for a walk” 
 

3. Emotions

We feel emotions that can be positive or negative with a lot of variations.

In the example: I feel sad, disappointed and bored.

4. Action

This is the behaviour and the things we do. 

In the example: I decide to sit on a chair waiting for the rain to stop

5. Reaction

The external and internal feedback or the results we get from our action.

The reaction will feed directly back at our thoughts and reinforce our belief about this external event.

In the example: I’m bored and not doing anything, it is reinforcing the beliefs that when it rains there is nothing i can do.

Wrap up:

  • The thoughts are always the origin of the emotions we feel 
  • The action is the result from the emotions
  • The reaction is the result of the action and tends to reinforce the pattern

Solution for improvement:

  • Learn to identify your thoughts and beliefs
  • Change the thoughts and beliefs that are not helping in your life
  • All the rest of the process will automatically change

In the example: if I change the thought or beliefs to: when it is raining it is the time for a good movie time, my emotions will be better, I will not be bored but watch a movie and the reaction of this will reinforce that when it is raining I have a good time inside my home.
